THE LORD OF SIPAN AND THE CHACHAPOYAS CULTURE
14 DAYS: LIMA, CHICLAYO & THE LORD OF SIPAN, KUELAP, CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU


Day 01 LIMA
Arrival in Lima. Reception and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon visit to Colonial and Modern Lima. Guided tour through the historic center of the city. Admire the beauty of San Martin and Major squares, the Cathedral, the Government Palace and visit the Convent of San Francisco and its catacombs, religious building from the end of the XVI century. Drive through the residential districts of San Isidro and Miraflores.

Day 02 LIMA - CHICLAYO
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Chiclayo. Upon arrival transfer to hotel. Afternoon visit to the city including the witch market and Monsefu, a quaint village famous for its craft market.

Day 03 CHICLAYO
Full day tour including Sipan. At 35-km/22 ml from Chiclayo, it is world known for the excavations in Huaca Rajada where the Lord of Sipan was found. The tomb holds golden, silver and copper ornaments, clothing, vases and personal objects of great value. It has a site museum. Continue to Tucume. At 33-km/20.5 ml from the capital, it is called the Valley of the Pyramids. The 26 pyramidal constructions of almost 100-m/328 ft wide and 33-m/108 ft high are distributed in an extension of 200 hectares. Also included is a visit to " Museo Nacional Tumbas Reales de Sipán (Royal Tombs of Sipan National Museum ) " This modern architectural building houses the collection of archeological objects of gold, silver, and copper found in the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. Among the many important pieces are earrings, ceremonial scepters, medallions, a heavy circular gold ingot, nose rings, gold necklaces in the shape of peanuts, a gold chin and cheek mask, gold back flap, and gold disks worn around the neck.

Day 04 CHICLAYO - CHACHAPOYAS
In the morning you will depart from Chiclayo by private car/bus with air conditioning. You will arrive in the late afternoon in Chachapoyas. Box lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Hostal El Chillo.

Day 05 CHACHAPOYAS
After breakfast you will enjoy an excursion by horse to visit the colorful funeral buildings of Revash perched on a ledge up high on a cliff. Box Lunch. Then you will continue to Leimebamba to visit an amazing collection of pre-Inca mummies discovered in the Laguna de los Condores.

Day 06 CHACHAPOYAS
After breakfast you will visit Kuelap, a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain. Although Kuelap was discovered 60 years before Machu Picchu, it is not as well-known to the outside world. Nevertheless recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Box Lunch. Following your visit to Kuelap, you will return to Chillo for the night. Dinner and overnight at Hostal El Chillo.

Day 07 CHACHAPOYAS
Morning trek to Chachapoyas burial towers of Macro, an outpost of the Chachapoyas culture built into cliffs overlooking the Utcubamba river. It´s unique location allowed for contact via signal fires with the fortress high above in the mountains and visible through a cleft in the valley hills.
Free afternoon for relaxation. or take a tour (at extra cost) to Karajia and the mysterious Sarcophagi carved into the hillside.

Day 08 CHACHAPOYAS - CHICLAYO
After an early breakfast you will return to Chiclayo by road. Box Lunch included. Late afternoon arrival and transfer to the airport in time to take the flight to Lima. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel.

Day 09 LIMA - CUSCO
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Cusco. Reception and transfer to the hotel. Balance of the morning at leisure adjust to the high altitude (11,000 feet). Afternoon city tour and nearby ruins. Visit Main Square, the Cathedral and its religious Art Museum, the Church of Santo Domingo or Koricancha. Includes visits to Sacsayhuaman and Puca Pucara fortresses, the temple and amphitheater of Kenko and the water shrine of Tambomachay.

Day 10 CUSCO-URUBAMBA - CUSCO - URUBAMBA (TUESDAY, THURSDAY OR SUNDAY)

Full day bus excursion to the village of Pisac . Visit the authentic and traditional Indian Market, where Indians barter their products. Continue through the Urubamba Valley to Ollantaytambo, favorite residence of the Incas, with its terraces running up the steep slope to the top where a carved stone throne allowed the ruler a magnificent view of his holdings. You will also see the fabulous Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo. Lunch included. Overnight at one of the nice countryside hotels in the area.

Day 11 URUBAMBA - MACHU PICCHU
Transfer to the Ollanta station for a morning train ride to the unparalleled, Machu Picchu , the " Lost City of the Incas". Machu Picchu was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marches of the Inca Empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stonework of the Cusco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion, Machu Picchu was associated with the earth cult revolving around the Coca leaf, a privilege restricted to the Inca Royal family and priests. Guided tour and lunch. Overnight at one of the hotels in the area.

Day 12 MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO
Morning at leisure to explore the ruins on your own or visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes. Mid afternoon departure by train to Cusco . Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.

Day 13 CUSCO - LIMA
Transfer to the airport in time to take the flight to Lima . Reception and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon guided shopping tour.

Day 14 LIMA - HOME
Transfer to the airport for your international departure flight or continue on the extension of your choice.
