Day 01 CUSCO
Arrive in Cusco. Transfer to your hotel. Balance of morning at leisure to adjust to the high altitude(11,000 ft. 3,400 m.). Afternoon visit to the city including Main Square, the Cathedral and its religious Art Museum, the Church of Santo Domingo or Koricancha. Continue to the nearby ruins: Sacsayhuaman Fortress . At a walking distance from the center, it has big walls of monumental stones distributed in zigzag and in three platforms that have an average of 360-m./1,181 ft. There are stones of as much as 9 m/30 ft long and 5-m/16 ft wide. Tambomachay, known as the Inca Baths. Clear running water flows through the stairways, and it is said to have been a sanctuary for water worship. Puca Pucara Red Fortress formed by terraces, stairways, turrets, urns, vaulted niches and platforms. Kencco Amphitheater . Built in rock, it is said to have been an Inca worship site. There are passages, canals, and stairways with stone engravings representing the puma, a sacred animal.
Day 02 CUSCO - URUBAMBA VALLEY (TUESDAY, THURSDAY OR SUNDAY)
Full day bus excursion to Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Located above the town of Pisac are the Pisac ruins, including a stone fortress with an impressive view of the valley. On the colonial town of Pisac, which conserves its Inca foundations, rises the hill known as the Intiwatana, with one of the finest terraces (Andenes) in the region. On the summit, the Incas built an astronomical tower with beautifully carved stones from which they could observe the course of the sun. Continue through the Urubamba Valley to Ollantaytambo, favorite residence of the Incas, with its terraces running up the steep slope to the top where a carved stone throne allowed the ruler a magnificent view of his holdings. You will also see the fabulous Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo. Lunch included. Overnight at one of the nice countryside hotels in the area.
Day 03 URUBAMBA VALLEY - MACHU PICCHU
Transfer to the Ollanta station for a morning train ride to the unparalleled, Machu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas" . Machu Picchu was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marches of the Inca Empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stonework of the Cusco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult revolving around the Coca leaf, which was a privilege restricted to the Inca Royal family and priests. Guided tour. Overnight at one of the hotels in the area.
Day 04 MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO
Morning free to explore the ruins on your own or visit the hot springs of Aguas Calientes. Lunch. Mid afternoon departure by train to Cusco. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel .
Day 05 CUSCO
Transfer to Cusco airport or station. You may continue on the extension of your choice.
