Choquequirao or "Chokekirao" is 3055 m.as.l. and is located on an ample Andean plateau in the Convention province, in the center of the Vilcabamba Valley. Its archeological sites are considered as important as Machu Picchu, this is why it is called Machu Picchu's sister city. Archaeologists presume that it is one of the several lost citadels in Vilcabamba, where the Inkas refuged in 1536.
You will leave Cusco on the Abancay Road and at Km 154 you detour to the Cachora Village where the trek will begin.
To reach Choquequirao you should be in good physical condition. The route starts at 2900 meters above sea level at Cachora and ends at 1530 meters above sea level at the Apurimac river. On the second day you will hike up to 3085 meters above sea level where the complex lies. To return, you will use the same trail.
Day 01 CUSCO - LIMATAMBO - KACHORA
Leave Cusco by bus, passing Izcuchaca town and Limatambo (Ruin of Tarawasi), Kunyac Bridge. We take a break for a visit to Saywiti stone. Then continue tor Cachora Pass. Camp in Waqcha Pampas.
Day 02 WAQCHA PAMPAS - WAYNA QALLI - ROSALINA
After breakfast we walk to La Colmena (countryside), there we will be able to appreciate the Chacamayo River, flowing through Cachora. Pass through the Pucaira pampas to the Apurimac canyon. After Chanchaillu (complex of fountains), we ascend toward big Wayna Qalli, (vantage point), from there you will appreciate a part of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, and also view the impressive Vilcabamba chain. Then we descend toward Cuca Masana, the flora and fauna starts changing due to the warmer climate. Finally we arrive to Rosalina Beach, camp site.
Day 03 ROSALINA - MARANPATA - RAQAYPATA
Today is considerate the most difficult day. Early in the morning we ascend the mountains on the Cusquean side toward Maranpata. We can observe colorful orchids and fragrant violets, and also animals like deesr, bears and birds. After resting in Maranpata, we continue to Raqaypata. Camp will be on the Chunchullmayu River banks.
Day 04 RAQAYPATA - CHOQUEQIRAO - SANTA ROSA
Day dedicated to visit Choquequirao Archaeological Complex, distant one hour from our camp. Guided visit and then time free to explore the eight sectors of this complex, having the opportunity of observing barns, Qolqas, campuses, the altar of the sun and terraces (andenes). Return to the camp.
Day 05 SANTA ROSA - CACHORA - CUSCO
Our last day of trekking. We will appreciate the canyon that forms the Apurimac River. We will take a new trail that crosses the throat of the canyon. From Wayna Qalli we will have an impressive view of the canyon, considered the most spectacular in South America. Arrival in Cachora. Leave by bus to Cusco ending at the hotel.
