6 DAYS: M/V AMAZON EXPLORER, IQUITOS TO IQUITOS CRUISE TO PACAYA-SAMIRIA, THE UPPER AMAZON RIVER
Departure: Sunday

A trip by riverboat to Peru's largest nature reserve. A five million acre area in the heart of the upper Amazon basin in Peru. A protected area of some 350 species of birds, abundant fauna of some 130 different animals and over 250 kinds of fish. A living nature wilderness area where these wonders of nature can still be seen in their natural habitat. There are three distinct ecosystems and the widest variety of flora in Peru, including 22 species of orchids.

The 16 passenger M/V Amazon Explorer was completely refurbished in mid-1994 and now sails on scheduled departures. The ship sails from Iquitos into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve on five night round trip cruises. The ship has eight twin air-conditioned outside cabins each with private bath and shower. The air-conditioned dinning room/bar and ample observation areas are located on the sun deck.

Meals are of regional and international dishes, including fresh fish, vegetables, salads and exotic fruits.

Day 01  IQUITOS - M/V AMAZON EXPLORER
Sunday
Transfer to the dock and departure  up the Amazon River. Sail out of this jungle town isolated in a vast green jungle, past small villages and agricultural settlements stretching along the banks. In the evening pass the juncture of the Ucayali and Marañon Rivers that in reality form the Amazon River. Continue up the Ucayali River for overnight.

Day 02 M/V AMAZON EXPLORER
Monday
Mid-morning shore excursion to visit a remote riverside village, a sleepy village little changed over the last 50 years. Continue upriver now in a greatly reduced flow of water.

Day 03 M/V AMAZON EXPLORER
Tuesday
Enter the black waters of the Pacaya River at the ranger station. An entrance fee helps protect this preserved natural area. Now our ship reduces speed as regulations require us to move through this nature area without disturbing it. A full day of viewing and experiencing this mystic area of nature.

Day 04 M/V AMAZON EXPLORER
Wednesday
We move deeper into this protected reserve. Now there are no people living in this area, only the reserve's rangers and a vast variety of birds, fish and fauna. Sunrise and sunsets are particularly active times for the inhabitants here. Several species of monkeys and sloth's will be seen and bird watching is at its best. The waters have many active fish, caiman as well as the giant "river lobo"(otter). In the evening catch a few fish for the dinner table (peacock bass, arahuana, dorado and piranha).

Day 05 M/V AMAZON EXPLORER
Thursday
The non-ending show around your riverboat continues. Our small shore boats will take you off to hidden undisturbed still-water lakes. Stop on the banks for a visit to the dense and varied flora of this still uncut jungle forest. Late afternoon begin downriver return. Cocktail party and closing remarks by the guides.

Day 06 M/V AMAZON EXPLORER - IQUITOS
Friday
Arrive in Iquitos after lunch on board. Transfer to the airport or or to tour hotell. You may  continue on the extension of your choice.
